For many families, Thanksgiving Day marks the unofficial beginning of the Christmas-tree-hunting season.

That could mean a trip to Home Depot, Lowe’s or the Macon State Farmers Market.

But some families like to take a short road trip to a cut-your-own tree farm, enjoying the experience and the tradition of the outing.

You can find several varieties of trees across Middle Georgia. Among them: Leyland cypresses, popular because they don’t shed their needles; Virginia pines; the bluish Carolina sapphire cypresses; Southern cedars; and the larger, more expensive Deodar cedars.

Be sure to focus on the actual height of the tree and how it will look back home. Trees tend to look larger at home than they do out in the field.

If you cut your own Christmas tree now, it should last through Christmas provided that you keep it in water. Put the bottom of the tree in water as soon as you get home and keep fresh water in the stand. (It’s a good idea to make a fresh cut through the tree stump to help water consumption.)

Happy hunting.
