A 20-year-old Poppy Avenue man has been indicted on charges of animal cruelty stemming from allegations he killed a pit bull in December by beating it in the head with a logging chain and garden hoe.

A Bibb County grand jury also charged Anthony Bernard Burke with giving a false name to an officer, according to Bibb County Superior Court records.

A Macon police officer was dispatched to 595 Melvin Place on Dec. 18 after two people saw him beating the dog, according to a police report.

The dog was dead by the time animal control arrived.

The hoe and logging chain were recovered by police, according to the report.

Burke was arrested Dec. 27 and released on $2,000 bond Jan. 2, according to Bibb County jail records.
