Close to 400 students throughout the state will compete on Friday, Feb. 13, in the third annual National Archery in the Schools Georgia State Tournament. The best-of-the-best from elementary, middle and high schools in 16 schools (from 13 counties) will convene in Perry for the tournament. The event will take place in the Miller Murphy Howard building near the West Gate of the Georgia National Fairgrounds.
The tournament is coordinated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division, and is open to all state schools enrolled in the National Archery in the Schools program (NASP).
A total of 343 students in grades 4-12 have registered for the event.
Participation in the shoot has more than tripled since the first year.
In addition to the tournament, there will be several activities for participants during the Great Outdoors Show. Admission is free for archers and registered coaches and $8 for observers.
Cancer swim-a-thon in Macon
Competing clubs Warner Robins Aquanauts and Swim Macon are joining forces in the fight against cancer. On Saturday, Feb. 14, at 9 a.m., swimmers from both teams are participating in a swim-a-thon at Northside Pool in Macon.
The effort is in conjunction with Swim Across America’s national “Swim Quick” campaign to raise money for cancer research. The foundation was established by nationally recognized swim coach Richard Quick, who has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.
Swim Macon is coached by Justin Correia, the sister of Olympic silver medalist Maritza Correia. Both will be on hand to honor the memory of their father, a cancer victim.
In addition to their personal intentions, Aquanauts members will be swimming for the benefit of team member Heather Walker, 13, who has been forced out of the water since last July due to ongoing cancer treatments.
Sponsors can make per-lap or flat donations. Contact either of the clubs at swimmacon1@yahoo.com or coach@wraswim.com to make a pledge. Northside Pool is located at 5097 Northside Drive in Macon.
