Debris closes Interstate 16

Interstate 16 headed east out of Bibb County is essentially closed.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office has set up a road block to keep people from getting onto the interstate at Ocmulgee East Boulevard. There is simply too much debris on the interstate, Bibb County Lt. Mike Scarbary said. U.S. 80 is passable, Scarbary said, but Twiggs County 911 has already told The Telegraph that road is closed to large trucks and that only smaller vehicles can get through.

The road block is also keeping traffic from heading south toward Cochran on U.S. 23. The wind in the area was strong enough this morning that traffic lights aren't just out, they've been blown away.
