A 20-year-old Sparta man died early Saturday when his pickup truck failed to negotiate a curve in Hancock County. Communications Operator Thomas Beckum of the Georgia State Patrol said the accident happened about 2:10 a.m. on Ga. 22 near Pearson Chapel Lane.

Beckum did not give the name of the victim because his family had not been notified by Saturday evening. The driver was traveling east in a Chevrolet Colorado when the pickup left the road, traveled 125 feet and hit a tree. The roof of the truck struck the tree first. The impact was strong enough to break off the bed of the truck and send it another 35 feet into the woods.

There were no passengers in the truck and apparently no other vehicles were involved.
