An Abbeville man was arrested and charged with murder in the death of a Helena resident Wednesday afternoon, a GBI spokesman said.

Special Agent Greg Harvey of the GBI said Anthony Travis Womack, 21, of Half Moon Road in Abbeville, was charged with malice murder and aggravated assault for the shooting death of Willie Gean Johnson, 25, of Helena.

Johnson died Wednesday afternoon at The Medical Center of Central Georgia after sustaining a gunshot to the head, Harvey said. Harvey said officials are awaiting autopsy results.

Harvey said Johnson drove by the Homer Avenue residence of a former girlfriend in Helena when he spotted Womack’s car about 5:50 a.m. Wednesday. Johnson parked and waited for Womack in the front yard.

The two men got into a fight, Harvey said, before it was broken up.

Harvey said Johnson then parked his car in front of the house while Womack was trying to pull out the driveway. Womack fired two shots through the front window at Johnson, one of which struck him, Harvey said.

Officials from the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office later arrested Womack at his residence, Harvey said.
