A 44-year-old Reynolds man was arrested Thursday in Dekalb County after he allegedly beat a woman with a clawed hammer and stabbed her in the chest Wednesday, according to the U.S. Marshals.

Edward Knolton is charged with aggravated assault and theft, said Deputy U.S. Marshal John Edgar.

Edgar said the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office requested the aid of the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force at about 3:30 p.m. today to help locate Knolton.

Knolton is accused of beating and stabbing the woman, stealing her car, driving to Monroe County where he allegedly robbed a bait and tackle shop and then driving to Atlanta, Edgar said. The task force’s investigation led them to find Knolton in the woman’s car off Memorial Drive in Dekalb County at about 7 p.m., Edgar said. He said the woman is listed in critical, but stable condition at a local hospital.

The sheriff’s office did not release the woman’s name or the name of the hospital where she is being treated.
