Enrollment at Central Georgia Technical College has increased 14 percent over this time last year, the college announced Thursday.

More than 5,700 students are enrolled for this winter quarter, compared to just more than 5,000 in 2008, according to a news release.

Central Georgia Tech President Ron Natale attributed the increase to more people seeking to improve their skills during a faltering economy.

“We are experiencing what is basically a major reset in the national economy, but it provides the opportunity for people to refocus on the basic skills they need to compete in the marketplace when the economy improves,” Natale said in a news release.

Online enrollment also continues to be strong with more than 2,100 online students. The college has the largest online student enrollment in the Technical College System of Georgia, according to a news release.
