A woman was hit by a car shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday night while crossing College Street at the entrance to Mercer University.

Angela Polk was leaving a reception at Mercer’s Lee house for newly crowned Cherry Blossom royalty when she was hit by a Buick Le Sabre as she was walking through the crosswalk from Ash Street.

Polk, whose daughter Kacy was a finalist in Saturday’s Cherry Blossom pageant, was taken to The Medical Center of Central Georgia with injuries to her side and shoulder.

The driver of the car, Gladys Giddens, who lives near the campus, will be charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian, said Mercer Campus Police Chief Gary Collins.

Giddens said the light turned green and she did not see Polk in the crosswalk.
