DECATUR -- More than 200 employees in the DeKalb County school system may lose their jobs in a budget-cutting move to save money. The proposal by Superintendent Crawford Lewis on Friday includes three different options on how to shed those jobs, ranging from mid-level administrators to groundskeepers to drivers' education instructors. The proposed cuts avoid elimination of teachers and other employees such as janitors and media specialists.
The cuts could come as early as December.
Lewis said, "This is the most difficult assignment I have ever been given. I have mixed emotions about it. I really do. I wish there was a way around it. But there's not."
Fire rescue workers extricate Nathaniel Newby from his wrecked car at the corner of Second and Mulberry streets in Macon about 8 p.m. Saturday.
