A suspected shoplifter remained hospitalized Saturday, a day after he was shot by a law enforcement officer in Centerville.

Ryan Cornelius Rumph, 18, of Marshallville, remained at The Medical Center of Central Georgia with a bullet lodged in his shoulder, said Craig Rotter, assistant special agent in charge of the GBI’s office in Perry.

Authorities plan to bring charges against Rumph and transport him to the Houston County jail after he is released from the hospital.

On Friday Rumph ran from a Centerville police officer after he was arrested for shoplifting at The Galleria in Centerville, authorities say. A Houston County sheriff’s deputy and a different Centerville police officer tracked Rumph down on a nearby residential street. Rumph tried to take a gun from the Houston County officer, who suffered a bullet wound to one of his fingers in the scuffle. The Centerville officer fired at Rumph at that time. It was unclear Saturday who fired the shot that wounded Rumph. Doctors at the Medical Center do not want to remove the bullet from Rumph’s shoulder, Rotter said.

The wounded Houston County officer, Deryk Collins, was at home Saturday and will miss a few days of work because of the injury, said Houston County Sheriff Cullen Talton.
