Megan Breitbach finished eighth overall in the individual portion of the GHSA Class AAAA cross country meet at Carrollton on Saturday.
Breitbach ran the 5-K layout in 19:05.19, a little over a minute behind individual champion Nicky Akande of Collins Hill. North Gwinnett won the team competition. Houston County finished 20th. In addition to Breitbach, Ausharea Adams, Emily Brown, Sarah Pospisil and Miranda Beard all ran qualifying times for the Lady Bears.
The Warner Robins girls, running without their top athlete Caroline Mauldin, finished 27th behind the efforts of Jaichelle Thomas, Alyssa Gisseman, Holly Thomas, Victoria Baker and Marissa Lilly.
On the boys side, Houston County finished 22nd and gained a measure of revenge over Warner Robins, the team that the Bears finished second to at the region meet. The Demons finished 23rd.
Houston County was led by Kasib Abdullah who ran 75th. The other Bears to post qualifying times were Ben Morris, Logan Cohenour, Austin French and Jared Hager. The Demons’ top finishers were Jacob Grubb, Karl Burkhardt, Conor Menges, Brandon Carlson and Chris Benefield.
Brookwood claimed the boys AAAAA title.
PERRY BOYS RUN NINTH AT STATE
The Perry boys cross country team earned a Top 10 finish at the GHSA Class AAA cross country meet at Carrollton on Saturday.
Each of the Panthers scoring runners finished in the top 100 as Perry placed ninth in the field of 32. Flowery Branch won the event, placing all five runners in the top 27.
Jesse Yeomans led the way for Perry. He finished 17th. The Panthers also got strong runs from Billy Colbert, Matt Peterman, Dillon Swartz and Nick Wood.
Peach County finished 28th. Eric Dean, D’Ante Mann, Ryshard Clarke, Ivan Rodriguez and Tanner Waite had qualifying runs for the Trojans.
The Perry girls finished 28th. The Lady Panthers were represented by Tiana Ortiz, Morgan Collins, Skylar Hudson, Tabitha Flowers and Lexie Parker.
St. Pius X won the girls AAA meet.
HORNETS EARN ALL-STATE
Three Westfield softball players were named to the GISA Class AAA all-state team. Christine Campbell, Ellen Grier and Katelyn McLean all played key roles on the Hornets team that finished third in the state.
SHARKS ADVANCE TO PLAYOFFS
The Houston County Sharks team handball squad defeated Henry County, 3-2, in sudden death overtime on Saturday at Bonaire Middle School. The Sharks played a great defensive game against a team that usually averages five goals per game. Leading the Sharks’ offense was Jordan Kozloski. She scored two goals including the winning goal in overtime. Min Soo Kim scored the first goal for the Sharks during the first period. Leading the defense was Jeff Wiggins who rejected shot after shot while playing the goalie position. Kierra Miles had several steals and key blocks throughout the game. Ben Masters led the team with three assists, setting the shooters up with passes. Kelley Jordan and Deyonce Williams both played excellent defense, denying the Hurricanes chances to get open shots.
The Sharks are currently ranked second in the state in their division. According to the current brackets, Houston County will play Henry County again Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Henry County Recreation Department.
