WARNER ROBINS — A 90-day effort to curb drunken drivers, speeders and motorists not wearing seat belts began Friday in Houston County. To highlight the initiative, the Thunder Taskforce motorcade of about 85 law enforcement officers rolled into Houston County on Interstate 75 on Friday afternoon.
“The overall goal is to reduce the fatalities and to take impaired drivers off the streets,” said Centerville Capt. Roger Hayes, coordinator for the Middle Georgia Traffic Enforcement Network.
The Thunder Taskforce is an initiative of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety targeting communities that have made the “Deadly Dozen” list of crashes, according to a Governor’s Office of Highway Safety news release.
According to state statistics, Houston County has had 11 fatalities this year.
About 100 law enforcement officers from county and city agencies in Houston County are participating in the crackdown, along with the regional Middle Georgia Traffic Enforcement Network, the Georgia State Patrol, the state Department of Public Safety’s Motor Carrier Compliance Division, and the specialized H.E.A.T. unit of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
Motorists may expect concentrated patrols for speeders and drunken drivers during the kickoff weekend along I-75, U.S. 41 and U.S. 129, the release said. Also, sobriety and safety-belt road checks are expected during the weekend on state and county roads in Houston County.
