Fort Valley has history. And a ton of it.
Open since 1870, Avera Drug Store is one of the oldest drug stores in Georgia. Anthoine Machine Works was established in 1885 and still uses line shafts. The McArthur-Saxon House, built circa 1850, is now the headquarters for the Peach County Historical Society, according to the “Walking-Driving Guide for Fort Valley.”
For the historical society’s annual box lunch fundraiser Saturday, Lane Packing is donating its tram for the day to take visitors on tours of the historic districts in downtown Fort Valley.
The lunch is 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is carry-out or eat-in.
Money raised will be used to promote the history of Peach County, said Cyriline Cantrell, the historical society’s president.
“We want to make the house more accessible and pass it down to future generations,” Cantrell said. “We want to create interest in our young people.”
The box lunch will cost $8, and the group is preparing for 150 people. The lunch is a sliced turkey and cranberry cole slaw sandwich on a croissant with apple salad and a pumpkin cheesecake bar. Tram tours begin at 10:30 a.m. and last a half hour. A 1:30 p.m., the tour will go through Fort Valley State University.
Also that day, Fort Valley United Methodist Church will hold its 41st annual Jailhouse Alley Art Center Show and Sale starting at 9 a.m.
There will be free demonstrations from artisans including Anne Touchton of Crawford County, who will display her award-winning gourd art.
