FVSU to celebrate homecoming

Fort Valley State University will kick-off its homecoming week Sunday with a free gospel concert at 5 p.m. at the Pettigrew Center.

The festivities continue at noon Monday with the Homecoming Kick-off Celebration at the Health and Physical Education Complex. The celebration will include introductions of the Wildcat football team and coaches, as well as performances by the Blue Machine Band, Dancing Dolls and cheerleaders.

The week continues with concerts, a comedy show and step show. The homecoming parade begins at 9 a.m. Saturday along State University Drive. Retired Pittsburgh Steeler and Wildcat alumnus Greg Lloyd is the grand marshal.

Later that afternoon at 1, the Wildcats will face the Kentucky State University Thorobreds in the new Wildcat Stadium. Tickets for the game are on sale now. Reserved seats are $30 each, general admission tickets are $22 and children ages 6-12 are $13.

Perdue Farms links with MGTC

Perdue Farms in Perry has signed a Quick Start training agreement with Middle Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins and the Technical College System of Georgia, according to a news release.

The training program will focus on post-employment training in core and job-specific skills. Middle Georgia Tech and Quick Start will assist Perdue Farms with training and finding qualified graduates to meet job requirements.

The program is based on Perdue’s commitment to provide about 150 new jobs for Middle Georgians, according to a news release.

Quick Start is an economic development program designed to assist new and expanding industry.

Brass Roots Trio to perform

The Warner Robins Community Concert Association will present the Brass Roots Trio at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, 205 North Davis Drive, Warner Robins.

The trio, a combination of trumpet, horn and piano, will present “Con Brio,” a program including Baroque, Gershwin and American spirituals. Adult tickets are $10, available at the door. Students are free.

Can hunger with credit union

Robins Federal Credit Union branches in Bibb and Houston counties will be collecting donations of canned goods until Nov. 6.

Donations will be given to the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank to help those in need around the holidays.

The canned food drive is being held in conjunction with First Friday’s Truck Load of Thanks, a canned food drive that will be held starting at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at Third Street Park in Macon.

Those who donate on First Friday will receive a downtown Macon Impulse Card good for discounts at downtown merchants.

Youth basketball registration

The Warner Robins Recreation Department has begun registration for youth basketball. Registration will continue from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until all leagues fill.

The basketball program is for boys ages 5-17 and girls ages 5-12. The child’s height will be required at the time of registration. A birth certificate is required upon registration unless it is currently on file.

Aviation museum photo contest

The Museum of Aviation National Photo Contest will end Oct. 30.

Photos must be taken of exhibits or aircraft at the museum. Entries must be submitted online, and photo manipulation is prohibited.

“Amateurs and professional photographers are encouraged to participate,” Wayne Carley, lead flight instructor, said in a news release. “The more creative the photo, the better chance you’ll have to win the grand prize.”

The grand prize winner will receive $1,000. Second and third place cash prizes will be awarded as well. Aviation professionals will judge the contest during the first week of November.

16 graduate from program

Sixteen community and business leaders graduated from Leadership Warner Robins’ 2009 program Oct. 13.

At the graduation, held at The Landings Golf Club, the class showcased its project for Camp Wings, a bereavement camp for children, according to a news release.

The class held several fund raisers to support the camp and presented a $7,605 check to Heart of Georgia Hospice, which sponsors the camp. In all, the class raised more than $12,000 for the cause, according to a news release.

Class member Brandie Thompson with AgGeorgia Farm Credit was chosen by her peers to receive the Dr. Dan Callahan Community Leadership Award.

Candidates now may be nominated for Leadership Warner Robins’ 2010 program. For more information, call 922-8585.

Casseroles for cancer patients

Color Me Pink, a mastectomy boutique that helps cancer survivors buy undergarments and other items, will collect donated casseroles for people in Houston, Peach, Taylor and Pulaski counties receiving radiation or chemotherapy treatment.

Casserole containers are available at Color Me Pink, located at 100 N. Houston Lake Road in Centerville. The casseroles will be delivered the week of Thanksgiving and the week of Christmas. For more information, contact owner Judy Mason at 953-1377.
