Samantha Sutherland was crowned in the first ever Miss ADA Tour De Cure Harvest Pageant last weekend.

The pageant was started by Sandy Bunn as a means to both raise money and awareness for the American Diabetes Association.

Winners in other categories included Baby Miss Raeleigh Elizabeth Woodard from Hoboken, Tiny Miss Raina Lynn Weathersbee from Eastman and Teeny Miss Kylie Thigpen of Cochran.

Jayci Roland of Cochran was crowned Little Miss and Hailey Wilson of Eastman was crowned Junior Miss.

The title of Teen Miss went to Jenna Brantley of Warner Robins.

Sutherland, the 16-year-old daughter of Cindy Hulett and Donald Sutherland, is a 10th-grader at Hawkinsville High School where she is involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Future Business Leaders of America, 4-H, Relay For Life as well as being a majorette.

She was also the talent winner, wowing the audience with her version of another teenager’s song, Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.”

“Samantha is a really talented young lady,” Bunn said. “She is active in her school, has done several pageants and has a bright future.”

Sutherland started singing at the church she attends, Double Branch Freewill Baptist, and was invited to sing at several other churches.

From there she has been invited to sing at fairs and festivals across the state, from the Watermelon Festival in Cordele to an appearance earlier this week at the Georgia National Fair. Next up for Sutherland is the Beaver Festival on Oct. 31 in Oglethorpe.

She is also an alternate for Clovers and Company, a state 4-H singing group that travels around the United States performing.

Sutherland said she was excited about spending the next year promoting diabetes awareness and helping to raise money for the ADA.

“It is just so important to talk about diabetes and let people know about the ADA and the research they are doing,” said Sutherland, who has two aunts and a grandmother with diabetes.

“I love touching the lives of other people and helping people, and I love pageants, so this one was just a chance to combine those things.”
