Monday, July 20

11:00 a.m. Queen’s Reception Henderson Village Angus royalty from across the country will be socializing over a tea “fit for a queen.” Contact: Katie Gazda, 2009 Miss American Angus Phone: 706.248.2618 ♦ Email: kgazda@uga.org

3:30 p.m. Mentoring Mixer McGill Marketplace Novice (first and second year participants) NJAS exhibitors will be paired with older and more experienced Angus juniors who will make sure they have a great first experience in Perry, Ga. Their mentors will introduce them to all of the activities and opportunities available at the NJAS. Contact: Mallory Trosper, NJAA Board Chair

7:00 p.m. Opening Ceremonies Reaves Arena This ceremony will mark the official beginning of the 2009 NJAS, with an introduction of state participants. The country act, Lady Antebellum, will provide entertainment. This will be a great opportunity for candid photos. Contact: Shelia Stannard, publicity coordinator

In addition to scheduled events, the following events and contests occur throughout the week:

NJAA Herdsmanship Contest—the purpose of this contest is to encourage fellowship and teamwork among state juniors in developing and maintaining a display of cattle and stall area.

It promotes pride and enthusiasm for the state junior organization and rewards those youth that achieve this purpose.

NJAA Sweepstakes Contest—this contest is designed to reward state junior associations for their members’ participation in various contests and exhibition of cattle.

Ronald McDonald House Pop-Tab Collection Project—The 2009 NJAS marks the third year for the NJAA community service project of pop-tab collection. Last year, juniors collected an outstanding 655.4 lbs., or approximately 830,392 tabs, to donate. This year they are joining together to break their previous record. Pop-tabs will be collected throughout the week and the state with the most pounds collected will be recognized at Friday’s awards program.

Trade Show and Silent Auction—the trade show and silent auction will take place Wednesday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in the Reaves Arena Concourse & McGill Marketplace.

Tuesday, July 21

6:30 a.m. Angus Foundation Golf Tournament Houston Lake Country Club Foundation supporters tee-off for a day of golf to benefit youth. Contact: Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president or Trey Davis, NJAA Foundation Director

7:30 a.m. Prepared Public Speaking Contest Roquemore Conference Center Juniors present their prepared speeches on Angus and beef industry topics to a panel of judges. They are evaluated on their knowledge, poise, and presentation. Contact: Robin Ruff, director of junior activities or Ann Blumer, NJAA membership director

8:00 a.m. Fitting and Showmanship Clinic Covered Arena Angus juniors can attend this informative session to better their show ring knowledge. The fitting portion will educate youth on how to prepare their animal for the show, while the showmanship clinic helps improve their show ring conduct. Contact: Brandon Creamer, NJAA vice chairman

10:30 a.m. Cattle Judging Contest Covered Arena Juniors try their hand at evaluating Angus cattle at the judging contest. Participants will evaluate both breeding and market cattle. 1:00 p.m. Certified Angus Beef ® Cook-Off Contest Roquemore Conference Center Angus youth and adults team up to cook their favorite beef recipes and present them in a fun and entertaining skit. 6:00 p.m. Annual Meeting of the NJAA Miller-Murphy-Howard Building During the NJAS, new NJAA board members are elected to represent the NJAA. The annual meeting is an opportunity for members to interview candidates and discuss any pending amendments to the NJAA by-laws. 8:00 a.m. Begin Show Reaves Arena Bred-and-Owned Heifers Juniors will show their Angus cattle in competition with other juniors from across the nation. This is a great opportunity to photo youth with their cattle. Contact: Shelia Stannard, director of communication and events

12:30 p.m. Extemporaneous Public Speaking Contest Roquemore Conference Center Juniors will be tested on their Angus knowledge as well as poise and presentation as they give their extemporaneous speeches on issues concerning the Angus breed or beef industry while given a limited time to prepare. 2:30 p.m. Team Sales Competition Reaves Arena Youth team up to sell cattle to their customers. This is an opportunity to put their knowledge to use in real-life industry experiences. Great photo opportunity. Contact: Robin Ruff, director of junior activities or Ann Blumer, NJAA membership director

1:30 p.m. Showmanship Orientation & Photo Session Reaves Arena Showmanship delegates are briefed on the showmanship contest that will occur on today and Saturday. They will also have a state photo. 3:00 p.m. Team Fitting Contest Covered Arena This is a great opportunity to take candid pictures of youth as they work together to properly fit a calf for the show. 9:30 a.m. Resume Show Reaves Arena Owned Heifers, Announce Premier Breeder, Premier Junior Breeder, Sweepstakes Winners, and Auxiliary Silver Pitcher Presentations. This is the final opportunity to interview or photograph junior exhibitors showing their cattle. Today’s show is a continuation of the owned heifer show from yesterday.
