Fort Valley State University is adding five undergraduate programs to the offerings at its Warner Robins campus on Osigian Boulevard, and they’re geared toward freshmen right out of high school or people going to college after being in the working world.
Beginning with the fall semester next month, the university is offering bachelor’s degrees in business administration and management, computer science and information technology, social work, electronic engineering technology, and computer science and computer information systems.
Anna R. Holloway, the university’s dean of graduate studies and extended education, said FVSU received the go-ahead for the programs earlier this year from the state Board of Regents.
“We met with the Board of Regents and other institutions, such as Macon State College and Middle Georgia Technical College, to ensure there would be no duplication of effort in what we offer,” Holloway said. “We have a nice facility in Warner Robins, we have the space and the desire to offer these programs.”
The new classes will prove to be a benefit to the community, she said, but she acknowledged the past still haunts the campus.
“About five years ago, we closed down the campus for a while, and sometimes it’s hard to get the word out now that we’re open,” she said. “We have core courses for those returning to college or those transferring from Middle Georgia Tech. We also want to make sure the high school graduates get started with a core curriculum.”
Another focus for the campus is Robins Air Force Base, said Jehad Yasin, interim dean of the university’s College of Arts and Sciences.
While the university already has an internship program with the base, it’s looking to bolster that relationship, he said.
“They’re the largest employer in the area; can we use their experience for college credit? Yes,” Yasin said. “We view Warner Robins as being ‘our market,’ and we try to reach out to the people who want to finish their degree.”
Any additional education can only strengthen the area’s labor market, he said.
“The baby boomers, such as myself, are getting old, and we want to make sure the younger ones are ready and qualified,” he said. “We’re talking about accountants, management, chemists, psychologists, criminal justice majors and social workers.”
Holloway added the schedule of some classes can work hand-in-hand with work schedules at the base.
“The campus is a good location for those at Robins,” she said. “They don’t have room on the base for classrooms, so our classes at nights and on weekends will be a benefit for them.”
The deadline for applying for fall semester classes is July 19, she said, but later applications will be considered. Classes begin Aug. 17, same as in Fort Valley.
