During the 2008-09 school year, Fort Valley Middle School started a new mentoring program entitled B.O.A.S.T., or Bringing On Academically Successful Trojans.

The program was designed to involve people from the community in children’s education.

It also brings in positive role models for the students to interact with and to help them begin exploring career choices and opportunities.

“We have started out few in numbers but strong in dedication and support,” said Sharon Lewis, the school’s graduation coach.

Mentors helped guide the students’ development by conducting activities to boost their self-esteem and self confidence. They supported students’ efforts, listened to their ideas and concerns, set high expectations for performance, encouraged winning behaviors and assisted in career exploration.

The school’s faculty, staff and students honored the mentors by presenting them with plaques during an eighth grade promotion program last month.

Mentors honored were Wanda Bishop, Woodie Hughes, Lyndon Prater, Tracy Marshall, Jerrell Smith and Aubrey Touchton.

Lewis said the school plans to continue the program next year and hopes to get more mentors involved.
