For young people interested in wrestling, a new program has been started that will give them an edge.
The Edge Wrestling Center started classes this week in Perry, with the intent of bringing the sport of wrestling to younger children. The Edge is an extension of the Perry Take Down Club, a wrestling program that Perry Middle School Athletic Director Randy Moss started several years ago.
Moss, who himself wrestled when he attended Perry High School, also coached varsity wrestling until becoming athletic director at Perry Middle.
He was selected as the Telegraph Middle Georgia Coach of the Year as well as AAAA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1999.
He is joined at the Edge Center by Randy Mizell, who was head coach of the Perry varsity wrestling program for three years, and Woody Green, who attended college on a wrestling scholarship and has been officiating for 10 years.
Getting a child involved in wrestling teaches a lot of things, Moss said, like self-discipline and hard work.
It also gets them from behind the computer and helps them become more fit.
“It teaches one-on-one competition and is also something they can do later on in their life,” said Moss. “They can eventually have the chance to represent their high school as a wrestler.”
Registration at the center is ongoing, and classes are from 2-4 p.m. Sundays and 6-8 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The first hour is dedicated to beginners, while the second hour is for wrestlers with at least three years experience.
The Edge Wrestling Center is located at 629 Gen. Courtney Hodges Blvd. in Perry.
