Houston approves promotions, transfers

The Houston County Board of Education has announced more promotions and transfers for the coming school year.

At a special called meeting Thursday the board, in addition to naming Helen M. Hughes to the vacant Post 5 seat on the board, approved the following recommendations from Superintendent David Carpenter:

Ÿ Linda Horne, principal at David Perdue Primary, to be executive director of elementary operations at the central office. Horne will replace Patsy Hutto, who is retiring.

Horne holds a certificate in instructional leadership from the University of Georgia, a master’s degree from Georgia College and a bachelor’s degree from Tift College.

She has been with Houston County for 26 years.

Ÿ Damita James, a teacher at Bonaire Elementary, to be a program specialist with the student services department. She will replace Joan Bareither, who is retiring.

James holds an education specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University, a master’s degree from Georgia College and a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University. She has been with Houston County for seven years.

Ÿ Shannon Schultz, a teacher at Matt Arthur Elementary, to be an assistant principal split between David Perdue Elementary and David Perdue Primary, Schultz will replace April Strevig, who will be principal at Lake Joy Primary,

Schultz holds education specialist and master’s degrees from Georgia College and a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University. She has been with Houston County for three years.

Ÿ Robert McDuffie, a teacher at Feagin Mill Middle School, to be an assistant principal split between Matt Arthur Elementary and Miller Elementary. McDuffie will replace Cynthia Hammond, who will be principal at Westside Elementary.

McDuffie holds an education specialist degree from Albany State University, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Georgia Southern University. He has been with Houston County for eight years.

Ÿ Sherry Akin, a teacher at Eagle Springs Elementary, to be elementary math coach. Akin will replace Karen Crider, who is retiring. Akin has been with Houston County for 10 years.

In an earlier transfer action, the board approved Cameron Andrews, assistant principal at Thomson Middle, to be assistant principal at Warner Robins Middle. Andrews will replace Dal Leech, who is retiring.
