Looking for the perfect valentine for that special someone in a couple of weeks?

The Sweet Georgia Sound may be your answer.

The group is offering singing valentines for $25 to be delivered Feb. 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. anywhere in the Warner Robins, Macon and Milledgeville area.

The money raised will fund the group’s projects.

Evelyn Kukla has been a member of Sweet Georgia Sound since 1982, when she was first invited to attend a meeting. It was love at first sound.

“The minute I heard the mesh of different parts, I knew I wanted to be a part of it,” she recalled.

Songs performed by the group include parts for a lead melody, a bass, a baritone and a high tenor. Kukla sings baritone.

“Those four-part harmonies just sound beautiful,” she said.

The group sings a variety of songs, from hymns to pop. The song performed for the singing valentines starts with “Cuddle up a little closer . . .”

There are 30 members in Sweet Georgia Sound, which practices weekly for competitions and performances.

While Kukla enjoys the singing itself during the delivery of the singing valentine, she says she also gains a lot of pleasure from the reaction of the person receiving one.

“Sometimes it is surprise, sometimes it is shock,” she said. “You can see it in their face.”

Any embarrassment is also just momentary and after the surprise the valentine receiver always enjoys the song, Kukla said. Many times the person who arranged the singing valentine arranges to present at the delivery, which can lead to another shock for the recipient.

Sweet Georgia Sound is the local contingent of Sweet Adelines International. The group performs at competitions, including one coming up in March in Chattanooga.

They perform at hospitals and nursing homes throughout the year and during the Singing Valentine deliveries they will include stops to perform for residents and patients.

Reservations must be made by Feb. 1, the group advises. In Warner Robins, call 923-7665, in Macon, call 751-7397, and in Milledgeville, 932-5387.
