Sorority chapter gives to Rescue Mission

Members of the Delta Pi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. recently prepared gift baskets filled with goods for the women of Macon Rescue Mission. Nine baskets were delivered this year. The sorority also presented to a young mother of six small children four boxes of food for a holiday dinner. The family was selected by the principal of Matilda Hartley Elementary School in Macon, the sorority’s adopted school.

Chamber Business After Hours

The next Business After Hours of the Warner Robins Area Chamber of Commerce will be from 5:30-7 p.m. on Jan. 8 at Edge Fitness, 402 Ga. 247 South, Bonaire. Registration fee is $10 per person, late registration is $15 per person and non-members pay $20. You may reply by Tuesday by calling 922-8585.

Houston Healthcare programs

Starting Mondays in January, Houston Healthcare will be offering “Help for the Heart: Heart Failure Education and Management Skills.” The free eight-week program will offer health education and support to individuals diagnosed with congestive heart failure. When a person is diagnosed with congestive heart failure, it does not

mean their heart stops beating; rather, their heart is not able to pump efficiently to meet their body’s need for blood and oxygen. Class size is limited. To pre-register, call 923-9771. Classes will meet at 10 a.m. Mondays at the Houston Health Pavilion’s EduCare Center.

An AARP driver safety program will be from 5-9 p.m. Monday at the EduCare Center. Participants will be eligible for a 10 percent discount on auto insurance upon class completion. The course is designed for drivers 50 years old and up. To pre-register, call 783-1988.

Hypertension self-management will be offered at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the EduCare Center. There will be an initial one-hour session followed by five monthly weight and blood pressure screenings. To pre-register, call 923-9771.

An American Heart Association CPR class will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at the EduCare Center. All participants will receive an American Heart Course C certificate. Class size is limited. Pre-register by calling 923-9771. Cost is $35 and must be pre-paid.

Dr. Ahmad Al-Hajj, oncologist, will present a discussion on treating colon cancer at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 21 at the EduCare Center. A light lunch will be served. To pre-register, call 923-9771.

Family practitioner Dr. Jody Velie will discuss osteoporosis at noon Jan. 26 at the Perry Hospital medical library. A light lunch will be served. To pre-register, call 923-9771.

Dietitian Sandra Brenner will discuss recipes and have samples of heart-healthy soups at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 28 at the EduCare Center. Cost is $5 per person. To pre-register, call 923-9771.

The cancer survivor fitness education program continues in January. The 12-week program is for cancer survivors and patients. Class size is limited and will be held in the Health Connections center at Houston Mall. For more information or to register, call 923-9771.

The Centerville Lions Club, a service-minded organization that provides assistance to Houston County individuals who are in need of sight and hearing services, is looking for prospective members.
