Northside presents encore of play
Northside High School will present an encore performance of its award-winning production of “Once on This Island” at 3 p.m. Jan. 11 in the Ray Horne Theatre.
The performance is the school’s annual canned food benefit. Admission is five canned goods or $5 at the door, and all proceeds go to a local food bank.
The school won its 14th State One-Act title in November with the production, making it the first time in state history a school won the state title three years running. In addition, Kiandra Richardson took home the Best Actress award, and Rashaad Williams and Morrissa Dunbar were chosen as All-Star cast members.
The production involves a cast of 39 and a crew of 23 students. The play is an original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale “The Little Mermaid.” The cast sings and dances the story of Ti Moune, the peasant girl who rescues, nurses and falls in love with Daniel, a boy from a wealthy family. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.

Peach addresses attendance zones
Parents of Peach County elementary school students are urged to attend a Jan. 12 event as the school system prepares to open two new schools in January 2010.
“Where Does My Child Go to School Next Year?” will be presented at the Peach County High Auditorium. The event will address new attendance zones, school bus routes and the process of moving into the new buildings.
New elementary schools are being built on U.S. 341 north of Fort Valley and on Kay Road south of Byron.

Student awarded scholarship honor
Elizabeth Cooley, a practical nursing student at Middle Georgia Technical College, was presented with the Danyel B. Allen Scholarship at the Fall Quarter Awards Ceremony. Gerri Sorrell, vice president for Academic Affairs, made the presentation.
The scholarship was established by and is funded by Danyel Allen, wife of college president Ivan Allen. She earned a nursing diploma from a Georgia technical college.
To qualify for the Allen scholarship, the applicant must be a practical nursing student and be enrolled in clinical courses. As part of the application, the student must submit a statement of economic need and a statement detailing how the scholarship will help them reach their educational goals. An instructor recommendation is also required.
Scholarships are awarded each quarter by the Middle Georgia Technical College Foundation to recognize the diligence and academic achievement of MGTC students. Students are invited to apply for scholarships quarterly.
School council meetings scheduled
Westside Elementary School has scheduled school council meetings for the remainder of the 2008-09 school year. Meetings are set for 4:30 p.m. in the school’s conference room on Jan. 29, March 12 and April 23.

Lake Joy chorus invited to gathering
Lake Joy Elementary School’s chorus has been selected to perform at the 2009 Georgia Music Educators Conference, one of two elementary schools in the state selected for the honor.
The performance is scheduled for 7:45-8:15 p.m. Jan. 29 in Savannah at the International Convention and Trade Center.
The school’s chorus has more than 200 members this year, with Bobby Helms serving as the music teacher and choral director.
