CLASS: Second grade
EXPERIENCE: 12 years
BACKGROUND: This week’s featured educator has an extensive background in Houston schools, having attended Miller, Rumble and Warner Robins Junior High before graduating from Warner Robins High. After being out for a while she returned to college as an adult and earned degrees from Macon State College and Fort Valley State University. She has a master’s degree in elementary reading from Walden University, and plans in the near future to begin work on an education specialist degree or a doctorate. She has this advice for teachers: “I know there are days when the paperwork and duties are overwhelming. On those days look deep into the eyes of the children you are allowed to teach and remember why you are here — you are making a difference in the life of that child.”
Why teaching: “I feel teaching was a call from God. I am very thankful for the opportunity to work in Houston County schools with our children, our future community leaders. Wonderful educators, like my father, touched my life and I want to pay it forward.”
Best part of being a teacher: “Each day is a gift and I am thankful for each child I have been allowed to teach. The most rewarding part of my job is when a student comes back and shares that lessons learned in my second grade classroom have influenced their life or a decision they have made in a positive way.”
Most challenging part of being a teacher: “It’s trying to meet all the emotional and physical needs of the child. Teaching is far more than ensuring the child knows the curriculum.”
If not teaching, what? “I would love to write children’s books or children’s Sunday School curriculum. Writing is a passion, and I would be so honored to think something I wrote touched the life of a child.”
Advice for students: “Value your education. Listen to your teachers. Bring your best to school each day. We are so blessed in our country to be able to receive a good education. Take advantage of the opportunities that are there for you.”
Advice for parents: “Enjoy the time you have at home with your children. Put them on the top of your priority list. It’s hard to believe how soon they are grown and ready to leave home. The time you invest in your child now pays off in the future.”
Home life: “I am blessed to be married for 32 years to Curtis Dalton. We have two grown sons, Adam Dalton and Eric Dalton, and both are graduates of Warner Robins High. Eric and his wife, Sarah Wooley Dalton, are expecting our first grandchild, Grace, in January. We are active members of First Baptist Church of Warner Robins. We value our time spent together with family and friends.”
