Holiday camp

at Ted Wright Park

Volunteer Houston County would like to invite families who were formerly members of the now-closed YMCA of Houston County to a Holiday Camp to begin Monday, Dec. 22, at Ted Wright Park on Moody Road. Children ages seven through 11 in first through sixth grades may participate in a variety of structured activities during the school Christmas break. Activities include service learning projects, character education, physical education, holiday arts and crafts, reading and math enrichment, writing skills, current events and movie time.

Cost is $129 for the camp or $20 per day. Children will need to bring a sack lunch. Other drinks, snacks and supplies will be provided each day. To learn more about Volunteer Houston County, a United Way agency, call 929-5464 or visit www.vhc-cishc.org.

Kids Yule Love donations welcome

Kids Yule Love of Houston County is placing collection boxes at Wal-Mart, banks and local businesses and restaurants during the holiday season. Simply take a tag from the box and purchase the requested item, then attach the tag to the item when it is returned to the collection box. If you would like to make a monetary donation, mail a check to Kids Yule Love, P.O. Box 1216, Warner Robins, GA 31099-1216. To learn more, call 447-6558.

Toys for Tots at drivers license sites

The Georgia Department of Driver Services, including locations in Perry and Warner Robins, is partnering with Toys for Tots this holiday season to serve as a toy collection site. You may drop off new, unwrapped toys during customer service hours through December. Centers statewide are closed Mondays. To learn more about Toys for Tots, visit www.toysfortots.org. Model railroads

to visit museum

The Middle Georgia Model Railroad Club will display a large miniature train Dec. 20-21 at the Museum of Aviation. The club will be giving away a Sante Fe Flyer starter train set. Visitors may enter the free drawing this weekend between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The winner does not have to be present to win.

Christmas card winners announced

Allison Townsend, a fifth-grade student at Matt Arthur Elementary School in Warner Robins, is the winner of the fourth annual Flint Energies Christmas Card Design Contest. The winning entry is featured on the official 2008 Flint Energies Christmas card, mailed to friends of the company, including legislators and electric cooperative CEOs across the country. A winner was chosen from each of the company’s service territories. Others winners included: Melanie Wood, fourth grade, Sacred Heart School, Warner Robins; and Michelle Mathis, third grade, Quail Run Elementary School, Warner Robins. School winners included Bristol Purvis, Kings Chapel Elementary School, Perry.

New ATM

location opens

MidSouth Federal Credit Union has opened a new ATM machine in the Wal-Mart parking lot on Watson Boulevard in Warner Robins. The new location will provide members additional 24-hour access. In 2002, the bank opened its offices located at 104 N. Houston Road.

Employees honored with bravery award

Al Williams and Lee Hollis, line workers with Flint Energies, have received the Georgia Electric Membership Corp.’s Life Saving Award for their bravery in helping an elderly woman escape a house fire. The award was established to recognize EMC employees whose courage and actions are instrumental in saving a person from grave and immediate danger, according to Jim Wright, Georgia EMC’s vice president of training, education and safety. Williams and Hollis had been hunting together in Upson County last winter when they spotted smoke billowing from a house. The men helped others trying to put out the fire, rescuing the elderly woman who had been asleep in a bedroom of the house.

Robins Federal Credit Union recognized three employees with awards for the third quarter.

Vickie Bailey, member service representative at the Hartley Bridge branch, was selected Branch Employee of the Quarter. She has been with the bank for four years.

Wendy Christian, collections assistant manager, was selected Manager of the Quarter. She has been with the bank since 1993, spending six years in the collections department.

Bobbie Jo Creamer, lending specialist in the indirect lending department, was selected Support Department Employee of the Quarter. Creamer has been with the bank since 2004.

An AARP driver safety program will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Jan. 5-6 in the Houston Health Pavilion’s EduCare Center. The course will update drivers 50 and older on the knowledge and skills of driving. Participants are eligible for a 10 percent auto insurance discount on course completion. Hypertension self management will be addressed from 4 to 5 p.m. Jan. 6 at the EduCare Center. The class will include an initial one-hour session followed by five monthly weight and blood pressure screenings. Education materials will be available. To pre-register, call 923-9771.

Dr. Ahmad Al-Hajj, oncologist, will present a program on colon cancer at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 21 at the EduCare Center. A light lunch will be served. To pre-register, call 923-9771.

A new program, Help for the Heart: Heart Failure Education and Management Skills, will take place at 10 a.m. Mondays in January at the EduCare Center.
