Mistletoe Market at Fairgrounds

Mistletoe Market 2008 will be held on Nov. 21-23 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter in Perry. This year's event, sponsored by the Balvaunuca Club, will feature more than 75 vendors. There will be book signings by former UGA coach and athletic director Vince Dooley on Nov. 21 from noon to 5 p.m. and Telegraph columnist Ed Grisamore on Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. The event has raised more than $40,000 for charities and services throughout Houston County since it began in 2005. Tickets are available from any club member or at Two Friends and Sugarplum Tree in Perry, or Beauty for Ashes Christian Bookstore. Tickets are $4 in advance or $5 at the door. Last Picnic in the Park event

Picnic in the Park will hold one last event for the year from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 20 at the bandstand in downtown Fort Valley. Bring your lunch and listen to music. The event is sponsored by the Fort Valley Community Foundation.

FVSU decoration demonstration

A holiday decorations demonstration will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 at Fort Valley State University. Ludell Dinkins of LRD Designs will be featured. Refreshments will be served. Upcoming meetings

WRHS grad earns UGA honor

Samantha K. Knoll, daughter of Nel Pugh of Warner Robins and Bart Knoll of Deford, Mich., was recently selected as a UGA 2009 Pandora Yearbook Outstanding Senior Leader. A 2005 Warner Robins High School graduate, Knoll is a linguistics major with a minor in anthropology. She works with Campus Cats and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies. She is currently performing research on the LAMSAS project with the university's English department and has worked with the Athens public library and UGA Press.

Fort Valley Tour of Homes

The Christmas in the Valley Tour of Homes will be from noon to 6 p.m. on Dec. 13 throughout Fort Valley. Tour historic areas including the Everett Square Historic District, St. Andrews Episcopal Church on Central Avenue and Everett Square Park. Featured homes include the residences of Mr. and Mrs. William Nichols, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Freshwater, Drs. Church leagues now forming

The Warner Robins Recreation Department is organizing the 2009 Church Basketball League. All churches are invited to participate. The league will run from January to March 2009. Games will be played at several church locations primarily on Monday and Thursday nights. Players must be 15 years old by January 1, 2009. The entry fee is $508 per team. Teams may register December 1-3 at the recreation department. Entry fee and coach's information is due at the time of registration. For info, call 929-1914.

The first meeting of the Special Education Parents Group will be at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 at Russell Elementary School. The meeting is for any parent who has a child that receives special education services from the Houston County school system. Zabrina Cannady, director of special education for Houston County, will be speaking. For info, call 397-1196.

Fundraiser for student

A yard sale fund-raiser will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, in the cafeteria of Tabor Academy at Northside High School. All proceeds will benefit Ceairra Mabie, a ninth-grade student who is battling Rhabdomyosarcoma. Grants awarded to teachers

Flint Energies and the Flint Energies Foundation have awarded $10,000 to teachers for innovative lessons in teaching students in the third year of the co-op's Bright Ideas program, which distributes grants of up to $1,000 for teachers. Thirteen teachers and team members received the awards from schools in Houston, Macon and Marion counties.

Moneak Harris of Taylor County High School won the online application drawing by submitting a Bright Ideas application via Flint's website. She received a $250 Staples gift certificate to purchase supplies for her classroom.

Vicki Andrews, a teacher at Perdue Primary, won a digital camera for her classroom by winning the early bird drawing.

Heating assistance is available

Appointments are currently being scheduled for Georgia's Energy Assistance Program in Warner Robins. Homebound and elderly residents, 65 years or older, may call the Middle Georgia Community Action Agency in Warner Robins to schedule. Other eligible households may apply on Dec. 1. The program provides assistance for low-income, elderly and handicapped households to help pay home heating costs. Households participating must meet income criteria and be responsible for home heating costs. Payments will be made by check to home energy suppliers for gas, electricity, wood, coal or kerosene. One-time payments will average about $345 per household. To apply or for more information, you may call 328-0333.
