Houston County and Perry have been named among the top 10 retirement destinations in the state.

Perry Area Chamber of Commerce President Megan Smith made the announcement Friday at Houston Springs, a community for residents 55 and older.

The declaration came at an event held by Houston Springs to herald the growth of the four-year-old community and to announce that construction of the final six holes of its 18-hole golf course will begin next spring.

Although the top 10 designation was for the entire community, Smith said, Houston Springs was a key reason for the recognition.

"I don't know that I would have filled out the 10 pages of paperwork if it hadn't been for Houston Springs," the chamber president said.

The designation is given by Retire In Georgia, a group that aims to sell the state as a retirement destination rivaling Florida and other traditional retirement areas.

Matt Marshall, president of Woodland Properties, which owns Houston Springs, said in addition to the golf course expansion, other beautification improvements, including to the entrance way, are planned.

Houston Springs, which opened in 2004, now boasts 224 homes and 350 residents. Many are former Florida retirees who wanted to move to an area without the threat of hurricanes, the developers said.
