Family-friendly fun is on tap today in Byron
The annual Battle of Byron will again bring residents together for a day of entertainment and good old fashioned fun.
Stop by anywhere in downtown Byron today and you're bound to find plenty to do. Starting at 8 a.m., a 5K race will begin at the municipal complex, followed 15 minutes later with a fun walk. A pancake breakfast will be going on at the same time at the old jail on Jailhouse Alley off Main Street.
Opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. at the downtown gazebo. There will be a classic car show in the parking lot of Byron United Methodist Church, with judging beginning at 11 a.m. for the top 25 cars, Best of Show and Ladies Choice.
There will be continuous entertainment all day on the entertainment stage at Jailhouse Park. Also, you won't want to miss the pie eating challenge at 10 a.m. at the downtown Depot on Main Street. At noon the hula hoop contest gets rolling, followed by a basketball shoot-out at 12:30 p.m., mud volleyball at 1:30 p.m. and a war ball tournament at 2:30 p.m.
The Byron library will have a book sale until 4 p.m. And local artists and authors will have their works on display at the welcome center throughout the day.
Other activities for the family include a Rotary Club box auction drawing at 4 p.m., karaoke with Wayne Higgs, musical chairs, tae kwon do demonstrations, a cake walk, Kids Corner with children's games and face painting, a dunking booth, the Tailgate Market and plenty of food for sale from area organizations. Take your pick of Italian ice, roasted corn, hot dogs, onion rings, pork skins, boiled peanuts, snow cones, popcorn, fried fish and more.
Battle of Byron T-shirts are on sale at the new Byron Municipal Complex, 401 Main St. Cost is $10.
