Trinity Christian head coach John Callahan knew his team faced long odds in its GISA Class AAA first-round playoff game against the FPD Vikings.

When the two team met earlier this year, the Vikings had a 35-0 halftime lead and ended up winning 63-0. But Callahan’s team still had goals for Friday night’s rematch and was able to reach some of them. That was still not enough, however, as the Vikings cruised to a 41-0 win over the Crusaders.

“The last time we played them, we didn’t get a first down the entire first half,“ Callahan said. “We were able to move the football on them (Friday), but when a team is as big and strong as they were, it’s difficult to keep a drive going. We held them to 21 first-half points, which was much better than last time. Overall, this team, with only two seniors, played as well as we could possibly play. We forced some fumbles, and we never quit. I was very proud of them.”

The Vikings struck early in the game, mostly behind the running of Ryan Smith, who scored two first-quarter touchdowns and gained more than 100 yards. Fullbacks Nick Mullis and Ben Dubose both had more than 60 yards rushing in the first half.

Overall the Vikings outgained Trinity 325-56 during the first 24 minutes of action, but two costly turnovers kept the game respectable. Taylor Jones scored early in the third quarter, his second of the game and FPD substituted for the rest of the game, scoring two late touchdowns. Trinity did have some bright spots, mostly from junior quarterback/safety Chris Hobbs but was never able to get close to scoring.

I am happy for our kids,” FPD head coach Greg Moore said. “I’m not going to waste time thinking of anything but the fact that we came in here and won a football game, and we get to move on. I have no doubt that we were ready to play. I can say that we prepared for this game like any other and although we had some miscues, I am pleased to advance.”

With the win, FPD advances to play Deerfield-Windsor next weekend in Albany.
