FORT VALLEY — With only two games remaining in their regular season, the undefeated Peach County Trojans (9-0, 6-0 GHSA Region 1-AAA) handled business on their home field, defeating the Dougherty Trojans 41-13 on Friday night.
Peach County running back Luke Crowell led the way with 72 all-purpose yards and four rushing touchdowns. Peach County’s 41 points were their second-highest point total of the season, as they defeated Westover 42-6 two weeks prior.
Dougherty, which had been held scoreless in their previous two games, fell to 3-6 on the season, with a region record of 2-4.
Peach County started its scoring right away, as LeBrandon Johnson broke a 61-yard run on the second play of the game. Two plays later, Crowell busted into the end zone to give Peach County a 7-0 lead only 40 seconds into the contest. Dougherty quickly responded with a 30-yard field goal from Mack Green, but Peach County scored again. After Darion Howard’s explosive kickoff return gave Peach County the ball on Dougherty’s 24-yard line, Crowell scored another rushing touchdown, this time on a 7-yard run.
As the quarter was coming to a close, Crowell found the end zone for a third time, as he ran 4 yards for a touchdown with 34.2 seconds left in the quarter to put Peach County up 21-3.
After Dougherty quarterback Sharoski Griffin was intercepted in the second quarter, Peach County quickly scored a fourth touchdown with two breathtaking plays. First, receiver Lamar Zanders caught an impressive one hand grab on the right sideline for a 31-yard reception. Then, quarterback Patrick Taylor hooked up with Courtney Mathis for a 37-yard touchdown pass, making the score 27-3 with 11:23 left in the first half.
Dougherty responded with a 68-yard rushing touchdown from Griffin, but it failed to convert a two-point conversion, and the score was 27-9 with 9:52 remaining in the half. Dougherty was undaunted, and its defense recorded two straight safeties on consecutive possessions to make the score 27-13 at halftime.
Peach County then began the second half in similar fashion to the way it began the first half. After forcing Dougherty to punt, Peach County started it drive on Dougherty’s 34-yard line, and Taylor threw a 13-yard pass to Demarcus Robinson for a touchdown. The score was then 34-13 with 7:45 left in the third quarter.
Crowell would later seal the deal with a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:28 remaining in the third to close out the scoring.
