With Middle Georgia area bowling just getting started for the 2009-10 season, it appears this year is going to be a wild one. With four 300 games being recorded during a recent two-week period, the number of perfect games posted during this season now stands at eight. Evidently, the bowlers have already conquered this year’s lane conditions with a vengeance.

It all started in Macon when when Alfy Nunez recorded his first perfect game bowling in the Commercial Ten Pin league. He followed his 300 with games of 225 and 182 for a 707 series. Nunez has been bowling since he was 10 years old starting at the University Lanes in Tampa, Fla. He used a 16-pound Brunswick Scorching Inferno ball. Alfy is the lead salesman at Shoe Carnival. He said he was glad to get the 300 out of the way and was looking forward to an 800 series.

William Smith became the next person to achieve perfection this season when he rolled a 300 in the first game of his 846 set (300-268-278) in the Wednesday Night Mixed league. Smith is one of the top bowlers in Macon with nine additional perfect games (including a previous one this current season) and a prior 800 series to his credit. His set was only 11 pins below the association record of 857 established by Bill Amaral in 2006 and was the 26th 800 series of the Central Georgia Association. The 34-year-old has been bowling since he was 6 years old, starting in the junior youth league at the now closed Macon bowl. He works as a printer at Custom Stuff. Smith used a 15-pound Inferno ball.

The following two 300s were recorded in Warner Robins — first by 48-year-old Bob Walker in the Friday Mixed league. It was Bob’s first perfect game. He completed a 759 set (300-266-193) in the process. He used a 16-pound Hammer Sting ball. Bob has been bowling for 40 years and noted that bowling is to him as golf is to many people. He started under the guidance of his dad who owned a pro shop in Lancaster, Ohio. Walker works at Robins Air Force Base as a weapon system manager.

The foursome was completed in the Tuesday Peterson Point league when Bill Haberin posted his first perfect game using a Track 715A ball. Bill started bowling in service on a base in Malaysia about 30 years ago. His series was 720 (300-196-224). Haberin is a manager at the Robins Air Force Base.

Heading up the youth were Jeffery Craig (637), Courtney Mane (606/228 game) and Cady McRight (578).

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

QUESTION: How can one create more ball speed?

ANSWER: The determining factor in ball speed is the length of the arm swing. By pushing the ball higher at the start of the approach one can create a longer arm swing and more speed on the ball.
