Tornado touched down in Macon, weather service confirms
Travis Fain
The National Weather Service has confirmed what a lot of south Maconites already knew all too well: A bona fide tornado hit the city this morning just before 6 a.m. The service classified the tornado, which destroyed buildings and downed trees all over south Macon, was an EF2 — meaning winds reached between 110 and 135 mph. The service has not yet confirmed that a tornado, as opposed to just a strong storm, hit in Laurens County, where one man was killed and three others were injured. A weather service staffer is making his way to the county, though, and forecasters expect to confirm that a tornado hit the county.
