One of the girls charged with having a loaded gun at Howard High School Thursday was released into her mother’s custody this morning after a hearing in Bibb County Juvenile Court.
The 15-year-old and another ninth-grader, a 14-year-old student, were suspended from school in connection with the incident.
After the hearing, the 15-year-old girl’s mother said her daughter has gotten into trouble for fighting at school in the past, but she hasn’t had previous trouble with the law.
She said her daughter took the gun to school in response to being threatened and struck in the head by a football player after school on Wednesday.
“She took (the gun) from home,” the mother said. The mother explained that the gun was kept at home for self-defense.
The mother said her daughter talked with her about the threat from the football player, but she never mentioned anything about the gun.
“She shouldn’t have made that decision on her own,” the mother said.
The other girl’s parents also attended the court hearing Thursday morning, but they declined comment until they receive legal advice.
