Bibb County commissioners voted unanimously this morning to build a new courthouse in the current parking lot at Mulberry and First streets.

The new building, just a few doors down from the current courthouse, is part of an $83.6 million plan that also includes a little-discussed move to build a separate Juvenile Court facility on Oglethorpe Street, near the Law Enforcement complex.

Commissioners hope Bibb County voters will approve a sales tax proposal to pay for the buildings.

Commissioners had been debating architects’ reports on four separate sites before this morning’s vote.

The architectural firms of Atlanta-based Cooper Carry and Macon-based Brittain, Thompson, Bray, Brown Inc. presented their study of possible courthouse sites to commissioners earlier this week.

The four formal sites reviewed were Oglethorpe Street near the Bibb County jail; the BB&T bank building on Second Street next to the courthouse; The Telegraph building on Broadway; and the parking lot at Mulberry and First streets.

The county is under court order to build a new courthouse by July 1, 2012.
