Woman remains in hospital after report of being kidnapped, burned

Jones County deputies are still searching for two men who allegedly kidnapped and burned a 52-year-old Macon woman Saturday.

Jones County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Calvin Pitts said the woman’s daughter told deputies two men got into her mother’s van near the intersection of Rocky Creek and Rice Mill roads in Macon sometime between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The daughter followed her mother’s van as it turned onto Interstate 75 and exited onto Coliseum Drive. The van then drove to Shurling Drive and on Ga. Highway 49 into Jones County, he said.

She lost track of the van near Pitts Chapel and Cumslo roads, but kept driving. After turning around, the daughter told deputies she saw her mother on the side of the road. She said the men poured gasoline on her mother and then set her on fire before running into the woods. The van also was ablaze, Pitts said.

Sheriff Butch Reece said deputies used bloodhounds and a helicopter to search for the men, but didn’t find them.

The woman was taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta. Her condition was not immediately available this afternoon. She was burned on about 60 percent of her body, Pitts said.
