COLUMBUS — Macon native Russell Henley saved his best for last at the Georgia Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Columbus.
Henley had his first bogey-free round of the tournament Sunday, pulling away for an eight-shot win to claim his second straight Georgia Amateur title. Henley, who is the first person in 15 years to repeat as amateur champion, shot a 4-under-par 67 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 16 under. His four-day total of 268 broke his own record he set a year ago at Idle Hour Club. He now has eight consecutive rounds in the 60s at the state amateur.
Henley played solid throughout the final round, particularly while contenders around him faltered. Henley’s Georgia teammate Harris English got within two shots early in the round, but he was 4 over after that to fall back into third place.
Henley, meanwhile, eagled the par-5 fourth hole and birdied Nos. 6 and 11 to build an insurmountable lead.
“I felt like I wasn’t going to hit a bad shot all day,”¿ Henley said, “that I wouldn’t make a bogey. That’s how good I felt about my shot (Sunday).”¿
