A Douglasville man died late Saturday night in an accident on U.S. 441 in Putnam County.

Raymond Ross Powell, 22, drove his 2004 Ford Explorer off the road and hit a tree north of Eatonton near the Morgan County line at about 9 p.m., said Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.

Powell was not found until about 7 a.m. Sunday when a passerby saw the wreckage of his vehicle, Sills said.

Powell was a U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Sills said.

The Georgia State Patrol post in Madison also is investigating a fatal accident that killed a North Augusta, S.C. man Saturday afternoon when he hit a guardrail on I-20 east and flipped his Toyota 4-Runner in Greene County.

A total of 15 people died in accidents on Georgia roads over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend travel period from 6 p.m. Wednesday until midnight Sunday.
