The candidates are seeking to succeed current Crawford County Sheriff Kerry Dunaway, who will retire at the end of the year after serving in the post for a quarter-century.

In other races in Crawford County, political newcomer Bobby Blasingame defeated Marsha Breedlove 264-177 in the Democratic primary for the County Commission District 2 seat. Blasingame owns both a construction company and a farm in the county. Breedlove is the acting county manager following the death of Candy Jones last month.

Blasingame will face Republican incumbent Carlin Onree Hodges for the District 2 seat in November.

Former District 2 Commissioner Harold "Doug" Spillers was initially also running for the seat, but was later disqualified by a judge after being found guilty of false swearing for failing to disclose a prior felony aggravated assault conviction when he ran for the seat in 2000 and 2004. Despite being ineligible, Spillers picked up some votes Tuesday, but those votes were disqualified.

In the District 4 commission race, Eugene Hamlin edged out incumbent Fred Walker 106-76.

Walker, a former chairman of the Crawford County Board of Commissioners, held the seat since 2004, when he defeated Hamlin, who had served in the post for the previous four years.

Hamlin had been appointed to the commission by then-Gov. Roy Barnes in 2000 and won a special election in 2001.

Hamlin faces Democrat Rebecca Mason for the District 4 seat in November.

In the tax commissioner's race, Democrat incumbent Cynthia Davis easily defeated challenger Dale Jump 1,021-370.

Davis has served as tax commissioner for the past 12 years, and worked in the office for 18 more years before that. Jump, a maintenance worker for Armstrong Corp., was running for office for the first time. — Information from The Telegraph's archives were used in this report.
