City opens Memorial Park rec center as rain shelter

Relief for people living in parts of Macon hit by the tornado continues, and today the city is opening the Memorial Park recreational center for anyone wanting to get out of the expected rain.

The center, at 2465 2nd St., will be open from 3 p.m. today until 8 a.m. Friday, according to the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency. Cots won't be provided, though, it's just a place to get out of the rain.

On Saturday a group called God's Pit Crew will give out hygiene kits, snack foods and beverages at Riley Elementary School, 3522 Greenbriar Rd., from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The emergency management agency will be giving out ice at the old Home Depot parking lot, at the corner of Eisenhower Parkway and Pio Nono Avenue, until 7 p.m. today.

The EMA also announced this afternoon that:

� Anyone interested in making a donation can go to the EMA's operations center at 700 Poplar Street. Items needed are flashlights, batteries, tarps, and clean-up supplies. Anyone wishing to volunteer his or her time can visit Nancy Dixon at the Macon Coliseum at 200 Coliseum Drive.

� Items will continue to be delivered to affected areas in South and West Macon today until 7 p.m.

� Existing WIC customers can be replenished by contacting their local WIC office. Food stamp recipients can have their benefits replenished by contacting the Bibb County Department of Family and Children Services at 741-2203. The EMA operations center can be reached at 751-7207 or 751-7208.
