Severe storms hit Macon

By Ashley Tusan Joyner - ajoyner@macon.com

The Macon area will remain under a tornado watch until 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Since about 6:45 p.m., the city and Bibb County have experienced severe thunderstorms including one-inch hail, high winds and lightening.

"It looks like things have quieted down a bit now," said Frank Taylor, a National Weather Service spokesman out of Peachtree City.

"We expect that things will be quiet until early Sunday morning, about 3 a.m.," he said.

That's when another round of bad weather stemming from a cycle in Alabama will reach the midstate and north Georgia.

"What that round will entail, the threat is more wind damage than hail," Taylor said. "Isolated tornadoes are possible."

Early in the evening, one- to 1-inch hail was reported in Bibb County near Williamson Road and elsewhere in Macon. Trees also blew down in a few areas.

Taylor advised people to stay inside and be cautious on the road.

"Keep an eye on the sky and keep tuned to what the weather's doing" he said.

Sunday's forecast includes a high near 84 and low around 52. Scattered thunderstorms are expected through midday and rain should move out of Georgia by late in the day.
