Two consecutive springs of yellow fever and Technicolor patent leather accessories have drifted into a new fall palette of somber greens, purples and sprinkles of blue. Black and gray serve as the perennial anchors of the season, but texture and shine will add new life to fall and subsequent winter ensembles. Clothing remains ladylike, but edgy. Fabric will crinkle on traditionally smooth items and a contemporary sheen will appear on classics.

A timely conversation recently started on my Web site, www.rosemond.com, when the mother of two young children, ages 2 and 4, asked how to best tell them and how much to explain concerning the fact that their daddy is soon to be deployed.

In ancient Greece, the original Olympic games were a no-tech event. Athletes competed in the nude in sports such as running and wrestling, and there was no such thing as a carbon fiber bicycle.

QUESTION: My 13-year-old daughter's father is irresponsible, to say the least. In addition to being a lousy co-parent, he frequently cancels visits and is often obviously lying about the reasons. Nonetheless, I've told her never to speak badly of him. There are times when I even end up defending him, sort of. When she questions his love, I tell her that of course he loves her. When he misses a visit, I tell her that if he gave things more thought, he'd do better. I tell her to talk to him about all this stuff and she says she can't. Sometimes her venting is rather sarcastic and ridiculing. I fear her power in relationships with males will suffer from her experience with bio-dad. Should I listen and say nothing or insist she speak respectfully of him if at all?

While spring/summer '08 has been all about color, look for a return to rich, luxurious shades for fall. Designers are emphasizing cool tones, including dusty purples, deep blues and greens, and smoky grays. On the neutral side, you'll see chocolate brown in abundance. Lucky for us, this palette is made to mix and match. Here is what's in store now in the pre-fall collections.
