Holiday stress is the fact. That romanticized version of holiday fun and fuzzy frolic is the fantasy. You know your family isn’t a Hallmark Card. But the truth is, no one’s is.

The meaning of the Advent season

We are at the beginning of Advent. Advent is a term derived from the Latin word “adventus,” which means “arrival.” It is a time of waiting for the arrival of Christmas. During Advent we look with anticipation and celebration toward the Christ event when Jesus came to Earth as a baby in Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago.

Children’s informality sign of change

QUESTION: It seems to me that children are far too familiar — too informal — with adults today. When I was a kid, we always addressed grown-ups by “Mr.” or “Mrs.” Or if they were in the family, we called them “uncle” or “aunt,” or “Grandpa” or “Grandma”. We would never have referred to an adult as Sam or Alice. But today’s parents don’t teach that courtesy to their children. Some of them introduce 4-year-olds to adults by their first names.

You may have heard the term “black gold” in your lifetime. While it is most often associated with oil, gardeners worth their salt will associate the phrase with compost. Compost is that dark, crumbly, organic material that is often a prerequisite for the green thumb.

‘Can you please help me load all of this into the car?” Mother would ask. There, in the kitchen of our home, was a whole collection of tried-and-true recipes sealed with everything from clear plastic wrap to shiny tin foil to colorful lids on Tupperware. Each of the scents slightly escaped from their confinements to tease our noses and make our mouths water.

As we gather together with friends and family today, we reflect on the things we are thankful for. This week I am thankful that my family has continued its annual tradition of syrup making. Through the years this has been an event that has drawn family and friends together. As times change, this is also a time that we can relive our agricultural heritage

QUESTION: I am looking for a Cranberry Fluff dessert recipe. I believe it had a graham cracker crust. I first saw the recipe in a Women’s Circle Home Cooking magazine from the late 1970s or early 1980s. It would be nice to have for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
