Jes Grew

In the 1972 novel, “Mumbo Jumbo” by Ishmael Reed, the Wallflower Order is out to rule the world and to contain the Jes Grew virus, an embodiment of ragtime, jazz and freedom. The Order prevents people from dancing and attempts to put a stop to dance crazes. We can conclude from this brief literary lesson that Jes Grew, a six-piece band from Aspen, Colo., has a mission to get people out of their seats and commit some serious dance crimes. The band is fronted by Cameron Williams (vocals, guitar) of Athens-based Tishamingo fame and backed by Randolph Turner (vocals, guitar), Rob Dasaro (keys, vocals), Stephen Vidamour (bass), Chris Harrison (sax, vocals) and Paul Valentine (drums, percussion). The Grew has been playing Aspen for over 10 years and has shared the stage with a healthy list of indie bands. The Grew sounds like an odd mix of old school blues, a little bit of classic rock and a touch of rockabilly. Whatever you call it, it’ll be fun. Catch the virus tonight at the Cox Capitol Theatre, 382 Second St. 257-6391.

Calvin Arline

Calvin Arline is a local musician with a lot of ties to Macon’s music history. He started playing bass while attending high school at Ballard Hudson. His band, the Royal V’s, played at Ann’s Tic Toc Lounge and for Clint Bradley, owner of the Key Club and manager of James Brown. Through this connection, the band played with Marvin Gay, The Platters, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and more. Arline toured with Percy Sledge and recorded albums with many more artists. Often referred to as Smooth Daddy, Arline went on to tour and record with other big artists – the list is too long to enumerate. He is currently working with local musicians like Sister Ray Ray, Robert Coleman and others. Come get your smooth on tonight with the Soul Blues Band at Riverview Ballroom, 426 Walnut St.

Austin Collins and the Rainbow Band

Raised in Houston, Austin Collins moved to Austin and started his college career at the University of Texas to study finance. He began writing songs in his freshman year and became convinced that songwriting was his talent. He left his job as a financial analyst after Sept. 11, 2001, and immediately began performing original songs. Collins quickly got hooked up with a producer and recorded his first album, “Something Better,” in a single week in Nashville. His recent album, “Roses are Black,” is at the heart of true gothic Americana. The songs are a beautiful balance of the poorly-labeled alt. country, a tinge of what the Eagles would call rock, emotional confessions and the truth. Once you hear Collins’ voice stretch in songs like, “Bridge Street Lullaby,” you’ll pine for it with the need of a lover left behind. Get to the heart of things Wednesday at the Hummingbird Stage and Taproom, 430 Cherry St. 741-9130.
