Grafted by Grace
Grafted by Grace are kickin’ it for God. This six-piece from Fort Valley plays contemporary Christian music with a bit of an edge. The band’s sound is rooted in gospel, blues and Southern Rock. The music along with their passion for ministry creates what GBG calls “music with a mission and a voice by choice.” Their name comes from the idea that each of their talents have been grafted together to do God’s work. Nice. Get your shot of grace tonight at the 567, 567 Cherry St. 238-6513.
Venice is Sinking
Venice is Sinking is in top form as orchestral pop, Americana, slowcore or space rock, depending on how you like it labeled. Founded in Athens in 2003, this five-piece outfit sounds familiar, rooted in cinematic measures, and lucid, ringing harmonies. The band’s first album, “Sorry About The Flowers,” attracted national attention for male/female vocals of singers Daniel Lawson and Karolyn Troupe and for Troupe’s clever layering of her instrument of choice, the viola. The new album, “AZAR,” finds Venice growing musically, challenged by engineer Scott Solter. Get initiated Thursday with the Packway Handle Band at Hummingbird Stage and Taproom, 430 Cherry St. 741-9130.
Mother Jackson
This four-piece from Athens recently released “Loud and Proud: The Soundtrack to Damnation,” an album that pontificates on the troubled times we find ourselves in today. Mother Jackson began with roommates playing together while working in the service industry. Eventually the music became the full time job. Their debut, “Suck on This,” although admittedly recorded in a haze, garnished attention from the likes of the Drive-By Truckers. With their second album, MoJack decided to keep things a little more cleaned up and partnered with David Barbe (ex-Sugar, Drive-By Truckers). MoJack describe themselves as southern rock and NYC punk, if you can find all of that in the sounds they produce. Get your political folly Wednesday at Hummingbird Stage and Taproom, 430 Cherry St. 741-9130.
