Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
Grace Potter has got it all: knee high boots, mini skirts, a smile to lift dull spirits, a voice that could raise the dead and one hell of a back up band. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are dedicated to the road and creating real American rock ‘n’ roll. Hailing from Connecticut, the five-piece is on their fourth album, “This is Somewhere,” an answer to Neil Young’s “Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere.” Potter wrote her first political piece, “Ah Mary” for this album: “She’s got dirty money that she plays with all the time…She’s the beat of my heart/She’s the shot of a gun.” But political agendas are not in every song: there’s also love, sex, tragedy, stories and a little bit of gospel. After seeing GPN live, you’ll want to go back for more, like a junkie of elevated lyrics and the voice that will grab you all the way down in your toes. Get hooked Saturday at the Bellamy Music Mainstage, Deep Roots Festival, Milledgeville. www.deeprootsfestival.com.
Trampled by Turtles
Imagine if you will a band without percussion. A band that flies in the face of tradition, creates their own rules and defies genres or label-ability. Trampled by Turtles, from Duluth, Minn., and proud of it, formed in 2003 when several bands broke up at once. All five of these boys came into acoustic with TBT – they had never played anything but electric. They’ve transferred the strength of rock into the passion of acoustic and added forlorn and beautiful harmonies. This is music (don’t call it bluegrass) at its finest. Bend your genre Saturday at the Bellamy Music Mainstage, Deep Roots Festival, Milledgeville. www.deeprootsfestival.com.
Mike Farris and the Roseland Rhythm Revue
Mike Farris debuted his solo work, “Salvation in Lights,” in 2007 and people who’d never heard of the former Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelie’s frontman, were stunned at the talent and sound coming from a voice of such a regular looking joe. Farris stumbled early in life after the divorce of his parents but with “Salvation,” he had found his balance again. Since the release of that album, Farris has toured extensively including Bonnaroo, SXSW, Austin City Limits Festival and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Last year he received the Americana Music Award for New/Emerging Artist of the Year. His sound has been described as a union of traditional black gospel, 70s Stax soul and southern blues. His latest release, “SHOUT! Live,” is a live recording captured at the legendary Station Inn in Nashville, Tenn. This is show not to be missed. Get your soul on Saturday at Cox Capitol Theatre, 382 Second St. 257-6391.
