You can tell that the new cafeteria-style restaurant just north of Forsyth is a labor of love of its owners. It’s kept impeccably clean, the staff is happy and friendly, and the owner is there all the time. Gracey’s Southern Grill is the pride of the neighborhood.
We had to go online to Google maps to locate Gracey’s, but after that it was pretty easy to find. You just take Interstate 75 to exit 188, turn to the right to go under the bridge, then right again. Once you get that far, you’ll see little signs on the right side of the road that are reminiscent of the old Barbasol signs: “Chuck Norris…”, “Nunchucks…”, “Get your dinner…”, “…for six bucks.” The signs lead you right in to find the restaurant on the left with Red Dog Outfitters.
One of the best things about Gracey’s is the price. Six dollars buys you your choice of an entrée and two vegetables. Drinks and desserts are extra, but it’s still a good deal. For $1.50 I’d like to see a larger serving for dessert, but it’s still not too bad.
Another great thing about Gracey’s is the place itself. It takes some driving to get to, but being just off the interstate helps. Inside is clean and tidy, with a vaguely Navajo décor. The yellow light fixtures and acid-washed concrete floor give it a modern feel and the booths are generous and comfortable. There is another room for large parties and busy rushes, as well as an outdoor area.
We came in at an off time — Sunday afternoon at 2 — so the lunch crowd had already left. We were invited by the owner to come down the empty line and pick out our meat and two veggies. My companion had the fried chicken, pole beans and greens with a corn muffin. I had the chicken pot pie but didn’t care for the other sides offered.
The fried chicken was just what it should have been — crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and just enough seasoning to make your mouth water.
The two sides were rather ordinary, with nothing wrong with them, just nothing to crow about. The corn muffin was hard and inedible. The chicken pot pie was good, with a nice flaky crust and enough sauce to satisfyingly sop up. Some of our food seemed a bit left over, but because of the time of day we tried not to let that color our opinion of it.
We were hoping for some of the banana pudding that we have been hearing about, but all they had left was a peach dump cake in a very small serving bowl. It was fine, but couldn’t compare to the ghost of the banana pudding I had in my mind.
The residents of Forsyth are justly proud of Gracey’s Southern Grill and for only being three months old, it is well on its way to becoming a mainstay on the culinary scene for Monroe County.
