There’s one thing that’s a deal breaker for me as far as restaurants go in the summertime.
It must be cool inside. Period.
On my recent visit to El Tequila Grill it was warm inside the restaurant — enough to leave sweat on my brow that wasn’t salsa-induced. Not the way you want to spend dinner on a summer evening.
But dine we did, so on to the food.
There’s a ton of variety on the menu at El Tequila. There are the usual combination dinners, chimichangas, fajitas, etc. But they also have some authentic Mexican dishes that you don’t find that often — flautas, chilaquiles and tamales, to name a few.
The prices are reasonable — most of the combination dinners are $7-$8, while most of the other entrees were $8-$10. The fajitas are about $12.
To start, we ordered guacamole and cheese dip to go along with the chips and salsa.
The cheese dip was good. I had high hopes for the guacamole, but it was bland. The salsa was spicy. The best thing about it was that they gave us our own little mini bowls of salsa — something I’d never seen before.
For our meals, I ordered a beef burrito, cheese enchilada and pork tamale. The beef mixture in the burrito had tomatoes and onions, and a slightly sweet taste, which I liked. The cheese enchilada was good, but could have used more enchilada sauce. The pork tamale was disappointing. There wasn’t much shredded pork in the tamale, which was too heavy on the cornmeal dough.
My friend’s parents enjoyed their food. Her mom ordered the burritos tipicas, burritos with beef tips. She said the beef had a mild flavor, which she enjoyed. She also liked the rice and beans, both of which she said had nice flavors and didn’t seem like afterthoughts.
Her father ordered the bistec, steak tips cooked with tomatoes, onions and peppers. He said the steak was tender and had a nice flavor.
My friend ordered the beef chimichangas. She said they were OK, but kind of bland.
The wait staff was attentive and efficient. We got our food quickly, and everything was hot.
Overall El Tequila wasn’t bad, but the bottom line is that for me to go back it would definitely have to be cooler inside.
