What is it about a tea room that seems so charming?

Is it the ubiquitous group of red-hatted, purple-dressed ladies at the large center table? Is it the delicate china bric-a-brac dressing the tables and lining the walls?

Or is it the selection of repasts that remind you of your great aunt’s Christmas parties of long, long ago? Whatever it is, Trish Ann’s Antiques & Tea Room in Haddock has it in spades.

Looking at the address, you might think you’d never find it, but it’s easy: Drive north on Gray Highway until you see the green Haddock city limits sign, then turn right at the (I believe) only four-way stop in town. Trish Ann’s is on the corner behind some lovely blooming bushes.

After walking through the antique store area of Trish Ann’s, you will be led into the dining area in the back.

We were seated in the annex area (with the ladies in purple) next to several large pane glass windows overlooking a lush wooded area. When the rain eventually set in, it was peaceful to look out those windows as we ate our salads.

Each dish comes with pasta salad and fruit salad. The pasta salad was nothing out of the ordinary, but the fruit in the fruit salad seemed thoughtfully chosen, with strawberries, kiwi, blueberries and pineapple outnumbering the usually prevailing cantaloupe and honeydew.

Our small group chose to share our selections of chicken salad, a slice of quiche and turkey/ham pinwheels.

The pinwheels fit the setting, rolled up with cream cheese and served on a china plate.

We found the chicken salad to be tasty at first, but then cloyingly sweet.

The quiche was by far the best item we chose. Cheesy, warm, and filled with asparagus that day, it was everything a quiche wants to be. I would eat a whole one if my doctor would allow it.

Dessert is what pushed this review up to three stars.

The white chocolate pecan pie was a little over-sweet for me, but the pecan cobbler took a traditional dish and unconventionally combined it with an indigenous product.

The ice cream delight was for our littlest guest, and our grownups said they had seen it before at family reunions. It consisted of several ice cream sandwiches covered with whipped cream, caramel sauce and chocolate sauce, topped with another layer of ice cream sandwiches.

The English trifle was the favorite of half of our group because of its richness and, paradoxically, lightness. A supermarket secret ingredient is added to a fluffy secret ingredient, and is then layered with strawberries and cake. If we hadn’t been sharing it, I would never have made it to the end.

Our final analysis is that Trish Ann’s is a lovely place to have a quiet lunch with old friends.

Because the service was a bit overwhelmed that day, we would like to suggest a complimentary while-you-wait snack, such as cheese biscuits or rolls. Only that addition would have improved our relaxing visit to this restful little tea room out in the country.
