Love is in the air this weekend as Mercer University Opera presents Gaetano Donizetti’s “The Elixir of Love.”

Sung in English and updated to post-World War II Italy, the opera follows the tale of mechanic Nemorino (played by junior Jonathan Johnson) who falls in love with wealthy cafe owner Adina (played by senior Elisabeth Slaten). Trying to win Adina’s love, Nemorino purchases what he believes is a love potion, but trouble ensues.

Joining the cast for the opera, which opened on Thursday, are two professional singers. Bass Michael O’Hearn from New York plays the role of Dr. Dulcamara, who sells Nemorino the elixir, and baritone Bryan Franklin from Atlanta plays Sgt. Belcore, who is also vying for the hand of Adina.

“Donizetti’s music is so delightful, comic and witty, but at the same time there is a yearning to his music. ... He tugs at your heartstrings,” said director Martha Malone.
